Castlewood Elementary will be
raising Brook trout for the 2009-2010 school year.

MAY, 2010
The Brook Trout were released on
April 30 and successfully returned to the wild. The
Little Stony Creek Chapter of TU provided activities that

APRIL, 2010
The release has been scheduled
for April 27th at Hanging Rock Recreation area.

MARCH, 2010
Chiller has not been working
properly and will need to be replaced. Temperatures
have elevated to 60 Degrees F. Received new chiller
and everything is back to normal.
FEBRUARY, 2010
Some of the new fish have died
off. Test of the water has resulted in high nitrate
levels. Do not know what is causing elevated levels.
JANUARY, 2010
Received a new batch of Brook
Trout from the hatchery. All is well and the fish are
adapting to the new environment.
DECEMBER, 2009
During the snow storm over the
Christmas Break, power was lost to the school and all of the
trout were lost. A new batch of fish will be provided
by the Marion Hatchery.
NOVEMBER 23, 2009
All the trout are swimming about
the tank freely. Set up automatic feeder for 3 times a
day. A lot of fish are feeding at the top.
NOVEMBER 16, 2009
All the eggs have hatched.
Many have have begun to swim and are going to the bottom of
the tank. There are two sets of twin Brook trout.
The tank has also been decorated.

NOVEMBER 2, 2009
All of our fish hatched out this
week. We lost four on Monday, four on Wednesday and four on
Friday. That puts our total at 962. The students are
getting very anxious for the fish to start swimming and for
them to start eating. They keep a very close check on
everything. The first thing they want to do when they come
in in the mornings is to go straight to the fish tank.

OCTOBER 26, 2009
Many eggs have begun to hatch.
There are a few that have died off and we remove those each
morning. Biozyme was added
to tank for the first time.

OCTOBER 20, 2009
Mrs. Johnson's class made a field
trip to Marion Hatchery to tour the hatchery and receive the
eggs for their TIC Program. They
received 1,060 eggs and removed 71 that were dead.
They will continue monitoring the egg count until
they hatch.
